What is TouchControl?
TouchControl is a powerful app that turns your iPone, iPad, or iPod Touch into a customizable universal remote control!** TouchControl interacts with a variety of devices and other applications to send commads from your iPhone/iPad/iPod to your PC, A/V equipment, and other IR- and network-controlled devices. In addition, TouchControl also allows you to control processes and applications, including mouse control and keyboard input, on your Windows PC directly from your iOS device. Home automation? Of course! Use TouchControl with your automation software and hardware to control lights, drapes, audio, garage doors, etc., and integrate that functionality with home theater or any other remote control functionality.
So universal remotes are great. We all know that. But what is sometimes overlooked is that when we replace multiple remotes with one, we just might lose some of the unique features of a device's original remote. I mean, they are designed specifically for the device that they came with, right? So what if you could have one remote that could become whatever you wanted it to be? When you're watching TV, it could look and act like a TV remote, with all of the unique features of your TV's remote right where they should be. And when you're watching a DVD, it could look like a DVD remote - again uniquely designed for DVD watching. Or better yet, it could look like a TV or DVD remote that YOU would design if they'd asked you to do it - and it would work exactly like YOU want it to. And what if all this could be packaged into one device, with one easy-to-use interface? Well, welcome to TouchControl!
What makes TouchControl unique and sets it apart from other similar apps is that you can provide your own buttons, backgrounds and other graphics to generate completely custom, personalized remote control interfaces. The software found on this site allows you to precisely lay out your remote screens, including buttons, links, labels and hotspots to make your iPhone screen look like whatever you want and act however you want. You could make the screen look exactly like a real remote, or you could take a picture of your remote, A/V equipment...or anything, and place buttons or hotspots on top which turn into remote control buttons on your iOS device. Take a look at the Gallery area of this site for sample screen layout ideas.
Another reason to choose TouchControl is for those who need network-attached IR capabilities. Line-of-sight IR is great for what it's for, but If you need to control equipment in another part of the house, or if you'd like to change the radio station or CD track of your whole house audio from out by the pool, and do it all from your iPhone or iPad, then this solution can make that a reality!
And the number of devices that you can control with TouchControl is already huge, and constantly growing! By directly integrating with software such as IRCommand2, EventGhost and Girder, and with hardware such as the USB-UIRT and network adapters from Global Cache', and through direct network access via HTTP, TCP or UDP protocols, almost ANY device can be controlled through a number of different interfaces.
But maybe the best reasons for choosing TouchControl is that, since you already own the iPhone or iPad or iPod Touch, TouchControl can provide you with one of the most powerful, customizable, fun and inexpensive universal remote control options available anywhere!!!!
**Please note that THE TouchControl IPHONE APP WILL NOT TURN YOUR IPHONE, IPAD, OR IPOD TOUCH INTO AN INFRARED REMOTE CONTROL BY ITSELF. In addition to the iOS app, you will need a Windows computer to design and configure your remote control screens, and you will need an IR transmitter device (either computer- or network-connected) to learn and transmit the IR commands sent from your iPhone/iPad/iPod (see below).
However, to remotely control your PC only, all you need is the TouchControl app, the FREE TouchControl Server software found on this site, and a Windows-based computer accessible on your local network via WiFi.
And, to remotely control network attached devices, such as Global Caché adapters, EventGhost servers, IP enabled TVs, DVD players, receivers, etc., you only need your device and TouchControl! (Windows computer needed for screen design and configuration only.)
Currently the TouchControl Server PC software runs on Windows 7, Windows Vista, WIndows XP, or Windows Server 2003/Windows Home Server. For IR communications, TouchControl Server natively supports the well-built and easy-to-use USB-UIRT device (see link to the right) for learning and transmitting remote control command signals. TouchControl also natively supports the iTach and GC-100 network adapters from Global Caché (see link to the right) for IR, serial, and relay control. If you use EventGhost, Girder, or IRCommand2 (see Using TouchControl Server for more information), TouchControl will have access to any IR hardware device supported by those applications. Follow the EventGhost and IRCommand2 links under the Links section to the right for more information on those products.
